Staying Healthy Forever

Picture
There is one thing that all of the weight loss aids on the market have in common.  Somewhere on the bottle, usually in fine print, there will be a note about how results vary and that the use of the product should be combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
The truth is this.  You don’t actually need the product.  You actually need a healthy diet and regular exercise.  Here’s how to get started.
Unless you live alone, you need to explain to your family members about what you are doing, what your goals are and how that could affect them.  If you are the person that buys the groceries, it could mean that there is less junk food in the house and more healthy choices.  They should be able to deal with that.

It’s a good idea to clean out your pantry and refrigerator, before you go shopping for groceries.  Anything that is not on your diet should be thrown away.  If it is an unopened container, you could donate it to a shelter or give it away.  But, whatever you do, get it out of your house.  You don’t need the temptation.
Write down your long and short term weight loss goals and hang them on the fridge.  Next to each short-term goal, write down your reward.  You should reward yourself every week in some way.  Make sure that your goals are achievable.  1-2 pounds per week is safe and achievable.
What about those programs that say you can lose 7-21 pounds in a week?  Some of them work for some people.  As long as you are not starving yourself by trying to follow a very low calorie diet for weeks or months at a time, then it is usually okay to give them a try.
But, check the ingredients out thoroughly before you buy any weight loss supplement.  Some of them are actually dangerous.  In just the last two years, the FDA has banned and issued consumer alerts concerning over 70 different products.  Hydroxy-cut and ephedra are just two of the products banned.
There’s another truth.  You really don’t need a supplement.  You could probably benefit from a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.  One that includes resveratrol and green tea is a good choice, because of the antioxidants they contain.

Just be sure that the manufacturer is reliable.  The reason for some of the recalls was that the products contained drugs that were not listed on the label.
In general, supplements that are promoted specifically for weight loss are a bad investment.  They don’t contain enough nutrients to take the place of a daily multi-vitamin and they contain too much caffeine.
If you have time to eat something every couple of hours, you will be less likely to overeat and you’ll keep your blood sugar and insulin levels stable.  Of course, not everyone gets a break every two hours.  If you don’t, be sure to eat enough to carry you through from one meal to the next, without hunger.
